Orlando Sanford International Airport (IATA: SFB, ICAO: KSFB, FAA LID: SFB) was used as a Naval Air Station in Sanford until 1969.

It currently serves as Orlando's secondary commercial airport after Orlando International Airport (MCO).

SFB is 43 kilometers from downtown Orlando and the major theme parks such as Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld Orlando.

Established in 1942, it has four runways and covers an area of 1,214 hectares with annual passenger traffic of 2.4 million in 2021. It sits 17 meters above sea level at 28°46′40″N and 081°14′15″W.

Despite the name, it mainly serves domestic routes only.

Located 7 kilometers from Downtown Sanford, the airport is owned and operated by the Sanford Airport Authority.

History of Orlando Sanford International Airport

The airfield was under the direct control of the US military from its establishment in 1942 until it closed down military operations in 1969.

By the 90s, a modern passenger terminal was built. Charter airlines catering to the heavy British tourist demographic began landing at Sanford.

In 2021, Canadian low-cost carrier Flair Airlines announced they would launch service between Sanford and five Canadian destinations.

Its busiest routes in 2021 were Allentown, Pennsylvania, Knoxville, Tennessee, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Asheville, North Carolina, Cincinnati, Ohio, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Indianapolis, Indiana, Flint, Michigan, Concord, North Carolina, and Lexington, Kentucky.
